Learn the business of art

Are you artsy fartsy? Of all of the artists I have known, most are an immense joy to be with and especially to party with. And most are just terrible—terrible—at the business of art. Calgary artists have a couple of opportunities this month to learn more abut this often-overlooked but vital aspect of art world success.

On October 13 and 14, join Leah Markham at the Leighton Art Center to learn about The Business of Art. This workshop is for artists who would like to learn about promoting their artwork, and the many business aspects of being an artist that may seem tedious or unimportant. Some of the subjects covered will be the benefits of having a web-site, how to grow your e-mail newsletter, approaching galleries, where your art fits into the market and how to price it accordingly. Leah also covers goal setting and having a plan that will help keep you on track. You will cover a lot of important information in this two-day workshop, and Leah will provide hand-outs to take home for your future reference. Tickets are $150.

On October 26, Calgary Arts Development and Volunteer Calgary will be hosting a Marketing for Artists seminar. Marketing professional Bradley Walker presents this workshop providing insight on how individual artists can market themselves and their practices. Walker has a pretty impressive resume (see the link for the deets), and I’m guessing you’ll be learning a lot from the chap. Tickets are only $5 each for the one-hour seminar.
