Westwinds Music Society open house tonight

Nobody remembers The Kiki Dee Band. It’s entirely possible that Pauline Matthews doesn’t even remember The Kiki Dee Band, and she was Kiki Dee. Then again, it was the early 70s…that’s a pretty blurry time for most.

With that said, an awful lot of people remember the song, “I’ve Got the Music in Me,”, first performed and made famous by The Kiki Dee Band. And for good reason…it ended up being covered by no less than two dozen other artists, including Heart, Sheena Easton, Aretha Franklin, and Celine Dion.

This is a really, really long introductory way of saying that music lives, man. Have you ever had the desire to be a music maker, but were too cool in school to join the band? (I say that as a trombone player for several years through middle and secondary school.) There exists a musical community in Calgary that is designed just for you.

The Westwinds Music Society is a non-profit community organization operated by and for its members, and is for adults only. Regardless of your present experience level, you can find a choir, concert band, or jazz band in which to learn to perform or build on your present experience. With five concert bands, five jazz bands, and four choirs, there’s a place for everyone.

These groups rehearse, in a structured learning environment, once per week from 7pm to 9pm, from September through May. Within each group, you will find the support and camaraderie of welcoming peers who play or sing at similar levels. You will have the exhilarating experience of performing for audiences several times per year in such events as the Christmas Concert, the Alberta International Band Festival, and Choralfest. In addition, Westwinds offers workshops, clinics and theory classes to augment the weekly rehearsals.

For those interested in travel, Westwinds offers enriching performance tours to International destinations.

So, you budding saxaphonist, trumpeter, guitar player, or singer, now is the time for you to nurture that music that you’ve had in you for as long as you can remember. Westwinds Music Society has an open house TONIGHT (Wed, Sep 12) at William Aberhart High School. There, you’ll be able to learn more about Westwinds, its programs, the costs associated, and everything else you need to know. Kiki Dee has the music in her. Do you? I say, friend, get it out before it causes you any more discomfort.
