Calgary WordPress Meetup Group to launch Jan 18

One of the several reasons I began writing the MrYYC blog almost one year ago was to give me a reason to learn more about WordPress (the platform upon which this is published). I’ve spent some time expanding my knowledge, and even attended WordCamp (WordPress conference) in Edmonton in November. That said, I find that I haven’t been doing as much as I wanted to.

To spur me along futher, I’ve started a Meetup group that I was hoping someone would start. Since nobody had, I figured I may as well step up. A handful of us held a short and unofficial first meeting in December, with the plan being to launch the group in January. January is here.

On January 18, I will be hosting the first Calgary WordPress Meetup Group meeting. Given that I am in no way a designer or developer, I chose a topic that I think I can confidently deliver myself. The topic will be a presentation of the differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com, and I will do a live installation of WordPress on a hosted server. This is going to be primarily useful to novice WordPress users. I expect the me-talking part to be about an hour, and hope that we can have a group discussion of whatever is relevant thereafter.

Endeavor Art & Event Space is kindly and generously offering the space for us to meet. You’ll find them, and the Meetup, at 200, 1209 First Street SW.

If you are interested in learning more about WordPress, do come join us at the first meeting of the Calgary WordPress Meetup Group. All experience levels and interests are welcome. We’ll be looking to expand into more advanced topics in coming months. Space is limited, and RSVP is required.

One thing discussed at the first pre-meetup was having regularly scheduled “workgroups”. Essentially, people doing WordPress-y things gathering together to do those things in a group atmosphere, offing mutual support and ideas, and ideally having a source of beer (that last bit was my addition…what doesn’t go smoother with beer as a lubricant?). I expect we’ll have more details on that on January 18.
